1. Mr D had a total fear of flying. He had to fly on business and came for help. The remedies were prescribed and he took them before and during the flight. He had no physical symptoms and was able to fly on holiday with his family thereafter.

2. Mrs R came with chronic sinusitis and recurring infections. The remedies cleared the sinuses and helped the body’s immun system. Days off sick were considerably reduced and she was able to breathe properly enabling deep sleep and less snoring!

3. Mrs J had recently been bereaved and felt that life was not worth living. After only a couple of consultations, her outlook and body health improved and even though the grief was still there, she felt able to cope. She then lost another member of her family and felt able to cope with it in a better manner.

4. Miss B suffered from chronic insomnia and had tried all sorts of treatment with no success. After one consultation, sleep improved and after a couple more, sleep quantity and quality were significantly better.

5. Baby E had eczema and asthma. After remedies and an individually prepared cream for the skin, the eczema and asthma cleared.

Reflexology is an ancient technique of treating the wellbeing of the whole body by systematic pressure on reflex points on the foot or hand. At its simplest it is often viewed as a form of massage – many clients initially come for treatments because of the relaxing nature of the experience. It is certainly a simple way of maintaining good health and easing stress.

In fact the technique is very subtle and the effects are profound, often helping to ease long-standing chronic ailments and acute conditions. Its effectiveness may be due to the fact that it seems to simultaneously trigger several healing mechanisms: for example, in addition to providing a gentle physical massage, the therapist is also working with the “meridians” (lines of energy used in oriental medicine) and channeling healing “energy”.

Its popularity has grown dramatically in Britain and much of the world over the past thirty years – almost entirely by word of mouth from satisfied clients. As Reflexology develops new techniques are found and specialist approaches develop.

What evidence is there to validate Reflexology?

The following information is taken from the Association of Reflexologists’ booklet “Reflexology within Medical Practices”. No copyright infringement is intended in its use.

In common with most complementary therapies, there has only been limited research aimed at validating reflexology. This is slowly changing, however, and the following lists some recent reports:

A study in Denmark of 116 patients presenting with a range of 15 condidtions resulted in 75% of those treated with reflexology reporting primary benefits and 63% reporting secondary benefits.

A large Post Office in Denmark which has employed a full-time reflexologist since 1990 reports a saving of around £100,000 a year due to a reduction in sickness and absenteeism of 13.3%.

A doctor’s study of 64 pregnant women within a G.P’s practice showed a range of effects, including a significantly reduced labour time for all those receiving reflexology.

A study (published in Obstetrics & Gynaecology) of women suffering from severe PMT showed a significant reduction in symptoms amongst those treated with reflexology.

A study of patients in the Trauma Unit in the Prince of Wales Orthopaedic Hospital, Cardiff, showed that those who received reflexology went home on average 3-5 days earlier than others. A follow-up study of knee replacement patients is now underway.

Further indications of the effects produced by reflexology include the following, which, although not subject to scientific protocols, have nevertheless been confirmed by medical tests or monitoring:

Normalising in high blood pressure

Increase in white blood cell count

Increase in hemoglobin levels

Increased blood flow to the brain in a study of women with migraine

Improvement in peak flow levels amongst asthmatics

Improvement in blood sugar levels of diabetic patients

Relief of chronic constipation and related problems

Reduction of anxiety/depression amongst a group of patients in a geriatric unit

Work in Mexico, the United States and South Africa with children suffering from mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism, and perceptual and emotional problems, showed improvement across a range of parameters including hyperactivity, behavioral problems, concentration, memory, socialisation, responsiveness, sensory integration, digestion and eating habits.

Miss J works within the NHS and picks up any infection going whilst at work. One of these was an infection of the chest, which caused her complications and to require time off work. Panic attacks then decreased her ability to lead a normal lifestyle and Bach Flower Remedies (using Rescue Remedy as the main ingredient) resolved the panic attacks and enabled her to return to work.

Miss S was finding it difficult to conceive and had had a stressful adolescence. Remedies helped with the situation and allowed her to conceive naturally.

Mrs S suffered from ME and this had left to panic attacks and an inability to control her thoughts at night, leading to insomnia. Bach Flower Remedies resolved the insomnia and panic attacks and I used Reflexology and Healing to work on her ME.

Bach Flower Remedies

This method of treatment and the thirty-eight Remedies which comprise its pharmacopoeia were discovered by Edward Bach, a renowned physician, who practiced for over twenty years in London as a Harley Street consultant and as a bacteriologist. His name (and fame) is perpetuated by the seven Bach Nosodes which he discovered, and which to this day are still in use. The late Edward Bach, M.B., B.S., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., D.P.H.(CAMB)., gave up his lucrative practice and research in 1930 to devote his full time to the finding of the Remedies and the perfecting of his method of Flower Healing. He sought for remedies in the plant world which would restore vitality to the sick and ailing, so that the sufferer would be able to overcome his worry, his fear, or his depression, and in that manner assist in his own healing.

The Remedies used in this method of treatment are all prepared from the flowers of wild plants, bushes, or trees. None of them are harmful or habit forming. They are prescribed, not directly for the physical complaint, but rather according to the sufferer’s state of mind, according to his moods of fear, worry anger or depression. An inharmonious state of mind will not only hinder the recovery of health and retard convalescence, but it is the primary cause of sickness and disease.

It is well known that a long continued fear or worry will deplete an individual’s vitality; it will cause him to feel out of sorts, below par of not himself. Under these conditions the body loses its natural resistance to disease. It is in a fit state to become the prey of any infection and any form of illness, whether it is a cold, rheumatism, digestive disturbances, or any of the more serious diseases. Therefore it is the patient himself, not the disease, who needs the treatment. It is an absolute exemplar of the old dictum that “there are no diseases, only sick people”! When peace and harmony return to the mind, health and strength will return to the body.

In Dr. Bach’s own book, The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies, he describes thirty-eight Remedies, one for each of the most common negative states of mind, or moods that afflict mankind. He divided these negative states of mind into seven groups under the following headings: fear, uncertainty, insufficient interest in present circumstances, loneliness, over-sensitivity to influences and ideas, despondency or despair, and over-care for the welfare of others.

Under the heading of “Fear”, for instance, there are five Remedies for five different kinds of fear such as: terror, fear of a known cause, fear of an unknown cause, fear of the mind losing control, and fear of other people. As an example, the Remedy for terror or extreme fear (ROCK ROSE) is even when the patient, or those near and dear to him, are seized with sheer terror, when the accident or the illness appears so severe that there is little hope of recovery. The nature of the condition, or the name of the disease makes no difference. If terror is present, then the Remedy for terror is the one which the patient (and his family or friends about him) requires.

The Bach Flower Remedies are absolutely benign in their action; they can never produce an unpleasant reaction under any condition. Therefore they can be safely prescribed and used by anyone, and this was Dr. Bach’s intention; that man could bring about his own healing. The Bach Remedies can be taken with any other kind of medicine with absolute safety; there is not the slightest danger of a harmful or conflicting effect to either medicine.

Other Flower Essences

Emma has studied Australian Bush Flower Essences with their creator, Ian White. They are very deep acting flower essences based on Dr Bach’s principles but using native Australian plants.

Mr S, in his sixties, had suffered from Sciatica for several months and had become so bad he was unable to walk far, dress himself, drive himself or even be a passenger. He was relying on his wife for many things and his sleep was poor. He received four weekly treatments reducing down to fortnightly then monthly. After the third treatment the difference was noticeable and within two months of starting the treatment he was able to do most things again including driving over 150 miles to visit family.

Mrs C had two children and wanted a third, but problems with her first two pregnancies caused her to be concerned about her third. She conceived easily and naturally and had treatment throughout the pregnancy. The birth was very quick: three hours from first contraction to birth. There were no problems for mother or child.

Mrs K had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome which led to orthodox fertility treatment. Regular, intensive treatments led to her conceiving naturally and carrying her baby well through pregnancy.

Mrs R had severe, long-term back pain. Weekly treatments, reducing to one treatment every three weeks, has relieved her of the worst of the pain. She says that during the therapy is the only time she is able to relax fully.Mr P has had chronic knee pains and had reduced his ability to live a normal life. Stairs were very difficult both at home (one flight) and at work (three or four flights). Weekly treatments reducing to fortnightly then monthly over a four month period enables him to “bounce” up and down the stairs!
